i've seen it done, as long as you have running water in the room it shouldnt be too tough. Maybe convert an old bathroom or somthing:dunno:

My darkroom is setting behind computer w/ Photoshop in the dark. On another note, a friend has a setup in his basement. Can't remember the name of his enlarger, but we used to set around drinking beer, shaking the film cans every couple minutes until they developed.

It's kinda cool printing your own film with the things you can do just with your hands covering up and how much light the paper gets. Thanks for the digital age now though.

honestly, do some homework on it. You need a decent size light tight room, water etc, but what is more important is the drainage issue. Check with your county to see what you can dump. Some of the chemicals are extremely bad, and if the county tests at all, you could face HUGE fines. NEVER EVER dump fix down the drain. Don't forget about venelation, those chemicals can get to you after a while. I always go home with a headache and metalic taste, but I don't wear gloves either.

Look locally too though, around here we can rent space at a pro darkroom/lab for $10/hr or less depending on time of day. That includes all the chemicals, drying devices, washing tanks etc. Not having to mix all your own chemicals and buy them is a huge savings, and you don't sacrafice the space in a house.

doing stuff in the darkroom is fun, but you better be dedicated to photography and you should probably be making money off your prints as well. its expensive, and quite time consuming. you can spend a few hours on one print.

i have about 2 years experience in a B&W darkroom. never got to do color, but i hear it has to be pitch black with no saftey light.

yeah, rental would be wise if you're not 100% sure you want a darkroom. it may be wise to check out your local community college and see if you can sign up for a photography class + lab. it may be cheaper in the long run + you'll have pretty much unlimited darkroom use

it only has to be pitch black when you open up your film to put it in the developing tank. You can have safelights in the darkroom that doesn't expose the paper.

i know it has to be pitch black when developing film, but i also heard it has to be pitch black when doing color prints. not 100% sure though.
