i'm going to start doing a decent amount of it, and had a couple of questions:

    1. Would you use a light tent or umbrellas, if 100% of your 'products' could easily fit in a light tent? Is there an advantage of one over another? I know you can use the ligts/umbrellas for other things (studio portraits, etc), but from some of the sample pics i've seen, umbrella shots seem to have harder shadows than ones taken in a light tent.

I'm siding more towards a light tent, since it'll take up less space than two big umbrellas, but :dunno:

    2. Adorama has a few "kits" available for under $300 (some well under). Is there a certain brand name I should look for or stay away from?

Read Light Science and Magic. The first half of that book uses product photography to teach the basics of lighting. It will give you an excelent idea of what you need to buy, plus you'll learn a lot.

What are you shooting? When I did this they had a light tent and an umbrella setup but the purpose was to show off the cars lines so the tent was mostly for that.

i'm starting off with a bunch of antique hand fans that my grandma wants to put up for auction. They are in great condition, but i want them to look amazing in the photographs.

there are a couple hundred of them similar to this:

i don't want a lame picture like what they have there or in other boring auctions. i want to take the time to make these look amazing.

I do quite a bit of product photography for the company i work for. Some of my pics are up on amazon.com. nothing special, just some foam core board and bounced, off-camera flash and trying everything i could think of to get the lighting just right.

Unfortuantely, I lack the PS skills to get the pictures to look right, or how to cut them out properly.

we do all of the product photography in my department (not me personally, but the guy sitting across from me) for probably 15,000 of the 30,000 items we sell, we mainly use softboxes for the lighting or bounce it off foam boards.
