I'm looking for a scalable host. I came across http://www.mediatemple.net/ but wanted to see if anyone has experience with them.

To start, I can most likely use shared hosting to save on cost just to get the site functioning and all of the bugs worked out. I currently use hostmonster.com for another project and they have worked pretty well, however they only offered shared.

I'm looking for a host that will allow me to scale my site seemlessly as it grows.

    If not mediatemple, any suggestions?

$14.95 a month for shared? I see a bunch of sites running promos for $4.95 and $6.95 for shared.

Are there any discounts that I should know about?

seems like you are looking for shared, just find the cheapest deal and you'll be fine. Honestly who cares about scaling if you are that level. You'll be using a few gigs of space, so you can always do a dump on your harddrive and reupload it to a new host.

Check the main forum, there are a few deal stickys for hosting. i.e. 5gb disk/100gb transfer for $3/mo

mediatemple blows. its a bad idea if you plan to use a database.
if you want shared and a grid, use www.imountain.com

I know I'll need shared for 3 to 4 weeks simply because of development time, and time between launch and promotion. No need in me paying for a dedi when i'll be the only one going on the site. With the amount of promotion I have planned I will exceed it quickly.

I'm just trying to save money where I can.

Good idea, except you add yourself a lot of headache with transferring your stuff over...and to save what $100-300 bucks?

If it's for development, why are you even looking for a host?

You can install everything locally, and if you want to share it with someone, you can set it up so they can access it off your machine.

I mean online development. Everything always works good on your computer, but then when it gets online theres always something.

So liquidweb is my best choice? Anything else I should look at before I go ahead with my purchase?

it seems like a bunch of the big blogs run on media temple, but they all seem to have problems. Mashable has had so many 500 errors for the past month

usually unforseen issues, problems with .htaccess etc. I always like to keep the site in "beta" form for a while to make sure its running smooth.

Currently using MediaTemple's DV hosting. Have about 10 domains on there.

Our biggest site on there gets 50k pageviews a day hitting a Coppermine Image Gallery. We had some issues at the beginning but it was due to a low amount of memory. We upgraded the memory and tweaked our configs and haven't had issues for at least 3 months.

Since our plan is "Dedicated Virtual", I have unrestricted SSH access to do whatever I want. I run a ventrilo server on there for my friends and I to talk on.

All in all our current plan costs $50/mo. I don't know whether this is a good deal or not, but it has been a pretty solid experience. :dunno:
