First off this has nothing to do with the prices (100 dollars difference)

What is really comes down to is this "Wood may be of new production on Service Grade Garands." If I buy a battle rifle I want it to have some character and most of that is in the stock damage.

So is the field grade still a good rifle or should I find an excuse to drive to Alabama sometime and pick out a service with old wood? Or is there a way to ask for a service with old wood at a higher fee?

You can't ask for specifics, it's simply the luck of the draw. My understanding is even if you drove there, they don't have many (or any) service grades out to purchase because they are held back to fill the mail orders.

Service grade rifles are in short supply right now, expect to wait around 180 days to get one. They are not selling service grade rifles in either store due to the amount of mail orders the CMP has. The only way to get a service grade is through mail order.

Field grade rifles are a crapshoot. Most of them have horrible non matching wood, or wood that has been sent through the CMP degreaser and they are very dry.

Field grades also generally have horrible TE and ME.

so what you are saying is it would be better to get new wood on a service than old wood on a field.

It depends on how much work you want to do. The FG rifles (unless you get lucky) will often have mis-matched wood and will of most likely been degreased. They will clean up nicely but you'll have to put a little effort into refinishing the stock. The wood isn't really the big issue with the field grades. Field grade rifles usually have high muzzle erosion, meaning the barrel is pretty well shot out. I was at the CMP south store a few weeks ago and the FG's were shit. Horrible wood and really bad ME's and TE's.

My suggestion would be to submit your order for a SG and wait the 180 days, or make a trip to either store and hand select a FG. Or pony up $999 and get a special grade. The special grades are super nice, they all have new CMP stocks and barrels.

I got a field grade and it's turned out to be a pretty decent shooter--the stock kinda sucks, but it's some Greek replacement made of semi ill-fitting Birch rather than the USGI-spec Walnut.

I would wonder how he shorted the barrel without having to redo the whole gas system

So they have some decent field grade rifles on the floor if you are willing to dig though them then? That is good to know, I might have to plan a trip up there later in the year.

I went with SG with mine. Heard great things about the SG rifles. :dunno:

Sure it takes longer but it will be worth the wait.
