If anyone saw my other thread you can tell I just got my first digi-cam, and now I'm looking to get the best out of it. I'm not asking how to use my camera, I can manage that, but moreso I'm asking what are some basic rules and guidelines I should pay attention to when I'm taking pictures?

practice, practice and more practice. Look at others photos for ideas and look at their lighting and composition. Don't center your subject, Google rule of thirds. Learn to look at the lighting available and how it evokes emotion or feeling and use it. Learn your camera like your car, knows its strengths and weaknesses, and how to overcome those.
