I am kind of thinking of going next year, I have a 2 month sabbatical coming up then, and am already planning on heading to Vegas about that time, kind of thinking of making a stop in Sturgis after that. I kind of want to go just to say I went and get the "I RODE TO STURGIS" patch (fucking idiots trailering their bikes there), but it just seems so crowded and commercialized, I don't think I'd have much fun, to be honest. Is this your first time going? If so, I want to see a full report when you get back!

That's the way a real biker does it. C'mon, people drive twice that far for trips all the time, so if you're going to a motorcycle rally, you HAVE to ride! And no fair trailering your bike to a place 15 miles out and riding into town, that's pansy.

I rode through on a cross country trip I took a couple years ago. I didn't stick around and party because I didn't have time, but it was wild.

That's what I might do. Head out to Vegas and spend a few days there with the wife, the take a route home that loops around to Sturgis and the other stuff around there, like Mt. Rushmore, never seen that. I figure that when all is said and done, I'll be around 2500-3000 miles total. Almost 1000 from my place to Vegas, and then whatever else I add on to that.

apparently I'm a pansy. there were a few reasons why we trailered them, mostly because it's 1998 miles one way and we both have limited time. needing to go 4000 miles but wanting time to ride around the black hills meant a trailer was best this year. but we'll be back and when we do we're riding.

we unpacked, the women took naps, and we bombed around this quick loop to see the area

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sad...014052,-103.363495&spn=0.331843,0.609055&z=11

we left at dusk and were totally unprepared (no sweatshirt, camera, clear glasses, etc) so we did that loop then headed back before dark. it's beautiful. i'll upload pictures during the week.

    rushmore
    [IMG]

while looking at rushmore my friend said "what's that?" and I turned to the left and zoomed and there's this mountain goat eating lunch.

rushmore from Needles highway (maybe 3 miles away)

    scenic shot from needles highway
    [IMG]

another scenic shot. up and down hills, 180+ degree hairpin turns, tunnels, buffalo and gazelles roaming around...very fun
    [IMG]

one of the tunnels on needles highway
    [IMG]

scenic shot of a buffalo burger cookout stop
    [IMG]

crazy horse monument. the front is what's going to be the final sculpture at 1/32 scale, behind is how far they've gotten. it's enormous but a bit of a disappointment. i saw it 10 years ago and it's hardly changed (if at all)

proposed final sketched over the real thing
    [IMG]

just another for perspective, it's massive.

more needles highway, canyons and shit
    [IMG]

we had to wait for the buffalo to cross before we could go on (I don't know the rider, I just wanted to show how close the buffalo were)

from the wildlife loop. we saw more buffalo, gazelles, deer, hawks/eagles
    [IMG]

this is how close they get...probably 8' away. it's blurry because i wasn't slowing down while the wife took the picture
    [IMG]

    the views were fantastic
    [IMG]

    the badlands
    [IMG]

50 miles of boring nothing to get there but the 25 miles through the badlands was worth it. this was just after the entry gate, just at the beginning of the good riding.

the views and riding were well worth the trip.

my new desktop pic (link to higher res, I had to take out a tree and a shadow from a car and person but I think it came out pretty good)

same ass, nice enough for a 2nd pic. she was on the other side of a parking lot so I had a hard time getting the shot with only 12x zoom

As a native of that region I can assure you that you did not see a single gazelle. Those are Pronghorns, not even related to African Antelope.

    Ok, no.

We stayed in Rapid City and did the loop down 90, up 111 to alladin, across the hulett, then to devil's tower. We were going to go down 14 to Keyhole and then take 16 back to Rapid but my friend's motorcycle was riding funny so we went straight back.

It's a good thing we went back, too. Turns out some of the spokes on his rear wheel were loose. The mecahnic said he probably would have been fine for a few hundred more miles and then said "but then again it could have come flying off after 5 more miles."

Anyway, no, we didn't make it to gillette. What's there worth seeing?
