Getting my CCW soon and was thinking about how much different a 147gr +p JHP Federal Hydrashok round will shoot than a 115gr FMJ blazer brass round. I'll probably end up buying two boxes of defensive ammo just so I can train with a box and a half, and load a couple mags with the rest. I'd like to put a few JHP rounds into some soft targets too, just for fun - maybe a nice cantaloupe or watermelon :o

I always put a few mags of my defensive ammo through at the end of a range trip. Always good for function/feeding check.

i usually do the opposite- shoot a magazine of defensive rounds first; but that's because i keep my magazines full of it, so it'd be odd/time-wasting/awkward to unload them only to shoot them later

but yah, ideally i'd train 100% with my defensive round of choice, if i could afford it

I typically shoot at least 100 rds of a new JHP thru the gun I plan to carry it in. If it doesn't shoot 100%, then I start over for another 100 rds.

Before I first started carrying I threw 200 rounds of my defense ammo downrange for practice and function check. Now I make reloads that fire similarly to my defense ammo. Can't afford to be shooting up my Gold Dots now that they are $1/rd.

dont have my chl yet but my bro shoots both mags of his carry ammo then loads target ammo into them. once he is done practicing he reloads fresh carry ammo into his mags and proceeds about his buisness.

He also rotates mags and shuffles ammo to keep from getting one round with super high case pressures from being chambered over and over.

Yep. Got to blow off a couple of mags every now and then just to make sure you have a feel for it, but I can't afford to blow off a few hundred every weekend at the range.

i have two K of ranger but i'm not going to blow away a 500rd case at a class.

i might start shooting out the ones that have been unloaded/reloaded a few times, though.

Me too. :hs: I was reading about this and it's actually quite dangerous apparently, as FMJ ammo will barely expand if at all, when hitting a person - it will just leave a nice hole in them as it passes through their body and continues on to hit whatever was behind your target.

Same thing in a house/apartment - FMJ handgun ammo will penetrate walls pretty easily. JHP ammo is designed to dump it's energy and expand upon impact which is why it does more damage. :hs:

You can do better than Hydrashock, but if that's all you got, it's better than FMJ. Especially since ammo is so hard to find now...
