I may have an opportunity to shoot a dance company and am wondering if you guys have any tips?? They are looking for individual shots as well as some of the whole company. I dont want to just do some lame ones of just headshots or something but catch them in action... also anyone have some tips of shooting groups?

    thanks!

Big umbrellas as a first for group shots...other than that, I dunno.

i've shot my daughter at numerous competitions and numerous recitals. action shots are tough if you don't know whats coming. the lighting at big competitions is MUCH better than i've seen at any of the recitals (think big concert light setups, but even brighter). just recently i did some of the team group shots for a studio. these were just a simple white seamless background and posed dancers, simple but they loved them.

yeah the action would be all planned and studio-like so I would know what is happening and I can light appropriately... I think I would need some more lighting though :o

that is nice, nice and simple and looks great!

I was also searching around and was thinking something like this as well to really capture motion of the dance

One of my Ex's was a professional ballerina.. so I shot that shit all the time..

Studio stuff isn't too complicated, just get your lighting right and tell them to do there thing.. Have them bring a dance book for ideas.. Shooting actual performances is more tricky..

    Some of my stuff:

If you can get them to a cool location, that's a little more fun but obviously presents many more challenges with the light:

If you need to borrow one let me know. Heather is here damn near every weekend and then back in Chicago Monday-Thursday.

Heck if you want to borrow the 17-50 let me know. Lately all I have been shooting is food which I just use the 90 so I could part with it for a week.
