    I find it easier to click the Spotlight button, type in "act..." and open Activity Monitor, or whatever it is I want than to go through the nested folders in Finder.

    Anyone else find themselves doing this? :wiggle:

    command-spacebar for th shortcut.

    Use it mostly to launch not-so-frequently used stuff like Toast! or a game. I rarely have used it to launch a file. But it's proven very useful to me.

    one of the greatest programs ever!

    I don't think I could live without it and when I'm at work I just wish my PC would have it.

    Appending text to .txt files saves me so many thoughts and time.

    Sorry end of promotion

    I have no problems with Spotlight whatsoever and I let it index my PB's entire HDD.

    Fuck letting anything from Google onto any of my computers. I don't need those fuckers spying on my every move on my computers so they can use them to develop another overhyped piece of shit product.

    I refuse to even let Google's page load on my computer. I always go into my Firefox and remove Google from the search bar, and I've been seriously contemplating editing my hosts file to redirect google.com to local host or yahoo.com.

    I don't trust Google. They have a track record of serious security flaws and there are lingering questions regarding exactly how they're using the massive amounts of personal data they collect.

    I use launchbar primarily. I kicked spotlight over to shift+cmd+space. Should I completely disable it? :noes:

    i definitely recommend it, since the indexer will still be eating resources whether you invoke spotlight or not

    from macosxhints.com with a few minor edits......

    first modify /etc/hostconfig to read:
    SPOTLIGHT=-NO-

    Then to get rid of the existing index, run these two commands from Terminal:
    sudo mdutil -i off
    sudo mdutil -E
    The first command disables indexing on the boot volume, and the second erases the existing template. You can then use Activity Monitor to kill any mds or mdimport processes or else just reboot. Futzing with permissions will probably break OS updates that try to update files in the zeroed-out directories and of course won't survive a repair-permissions run.
    If you later change your mind and decide you want Spotlight after all, it's easy to reactivate. Set

    SPOTLIGHT=-YES-
    in /etc/hostconfig, run in Terminal:
    mdutil -i on /
    and reboot.
