depends what you are trying to advertise. Are you trying to get traffic to a site or just sell a product/affiliate offer directly?

yeah rob not a problem there are myspace tools that you can collect the userid for everyone in your area and message them to tell them about the site, I did that with my pet store when I owned it.

If you are talking about advertising services on myspace through bulletins and spamming people I've done that but i don't touch it anymore due to how myspace's legal team is. it was nice tho I made about 1200 dollars in 3 days.

any idea what tools would be good? I'm not sure which I want to use. I used a demo version of FriendBlaster pro, and it does a good job of harvesting the user ids, but then It won't invite friends. I'm not sure if its just b/c its the trial version or not.

It's because all those tools were made awhile ago, when they actually worked on myspace. Since then, as I am sure you have noticed, myspace made a ton of security changes. The tools say they can bypass the capchas, but that's a load of crap.

    Not to my knowledge.

It may work for a few people, but then the capchas start popping up as Myspace knows that friends are being added too quickly. There may be one that will add them as long as you are there to input the capchas, but that kinda defeats the purpose.

i tried several of them today, none of which worked. Oh well, the facebook advertising looks promising, it really targets the right demographic and isnt much $$

I write my own crawlers and I had one for MySpace but it has become incredibly difficult to even just log in now.

Facebook is becoming harder to crawl as well. They have changed the friend lists option to a Javascript/AJAX type layout so crawlers cannot simulate the click of a button.

The problem is this: both sites are now using Javascript as a navigation engine which means that crawlers must parse and execute Javascript (the way a browser does). In some languages like Java, this is easy. In Python, it is not. :-(
