 Was flipping through a magazine and saw this and thought I'd share just for entertainment.

There's one of those cards in the magazine and it's shaped like a camera and it says "Anyone can take a great digital picture with a Nikon D40 in their hands." on the front. You open it up and it says, "To prove it, we gave 200 compact, easy-to-use Nikon D40's to the people of one small town: Georgetown, SC. Check out their pictures, and see how a whole town was transformed at stunningnikon.com/picturetown"

    :dunno: :o

That gallery is hard to navigate and those pictures aren't that great... I expected a bunch of random lucky shots, but those are pretty consistently noob...

i took some pics with my new D40 that i got for Xmas this yr, im having trouble getting the color right...i guess maybe im sorta trying to produce those HDR type photos, have no clue but i want the object to really stand out and i think that has more to do with field of depth settings. Heres two pics probably my best today one with just resize and other with some photoshop color treatment......i know their not great but im trying to learn. oh top one is on manuel control

actually, to the majority of the public (and the consumer base that nikon is trying to reach) it conveys the point that anyone can pick up a D40 and start taking pictures. and despite the "noobness" of the pictures on the site, its loads better in quality than the point and shoot that the majority of people looking to purchase a DSLR have.

all in all, pretty clever marketing by nikon.

untill my clients start calling up nikontownians to replace me i don't really care. and i don't see that happening anytime soon. it's cool for soccer moms and yearbook squad geeks and stuff but I bet this sort of thing puts a hurt on the smalltown folks out there that try to pay the bills shooting little league and shit like that though.

The d40 and d40x are amazing cameras.
Just because it says it's a beginners SLR it doesn't mean some pro's don't use it either.

Here's an example of a picture I took with the D40.

So does anybody thats going to buy a DSLR. The d40(x) gets a lot of hate here because it has no internal focusing motor limiting what lenses you can use it with. Its AF system is adequate, but not really really fast. It's not a bad camera, I just need more - as do *some* people on here. A lot of people just go along with everyone else saying its a crap camera when they really have no idea why they are saying such things - other than the fact that everyone else is saying it.

My XT was a beginners camera, but I took some better shots with it than I did with my 30d - Photography is mostly a about timing and skill - not the camera.

Ya unfortunately it doesn't have internal focusing motor but there are still a wide variety of lenses you can use with it. I do agree that some people just agree with everyone else saying it's a bad camera. People just jump on the bandwagon because one person says it's a bad camera.

I have taken some great pictures with all different Nikon cameras. Like the D40,D80,D200,D2Xs,D300,D3

Tons of AF-S and HSM lenses for the D40/x. And AF-S and HSM are much faster/more silent than regular AF. If one is starting out in the DSLR world, it's a good body to start out with. If you want to upgrade down the road, you still have your AF-S and HSM lenses which are compatible with your new body anyway.

:ugh: by "tons" do you mean around 10?

i don't understand why the same ppl who say lenses, skill, and experience are much more important than the body always need to put down the d40/x. :nono:

I don't like that there is only one prime lense (sigma 30mm f/1.4) that can be used. Maybe there will be more down the road :hs:
