I was thinking of making one this week just for fun. I seen a bunch made with cardboard boxes but I didnt like the idea of it. So Im going to make one with some wood and other shit I can find.

Can anyone recommend materials for the backdrop and side, etc?

for that, are you just snapping a shot into the box with your camera, then setting a custom WB off of that?

^^yeah. On my 10d you would just take a pic of something white in the light you are working with. Make sure the white takes up the sensor area and then take a pic. Then go into menu and select the pic as the custom WB. When you take the pic it doesn't matter what WB setting you have. Just a FYI

I used white foam board for mine... On the two sides, cut a big square in the middle (with about two inches of board left on each edge) and put tissue paper in there. That way, the light can go in the sides, but be diffused properly

Using that box from that tutorial you posted. Yes the knife is pink (I stole it from my friend who happens to be a girl). The box has since broken apart so I threw it out but it's a nifty thing to have.

I just went to my local art supply store and picked up 2 pieces of foam board and 2 canvases with a frame. Do you think the canvas would properly diffuse the light or is it too "heavy" of a material? The canvas is in plastic so Im kinda iffy to open them up. I just realized I didnt get a cover for the back of the box  FUCK. Oh well I dont have an lights I could use anyway.

I built the strobist version as well. It works nicely, but I don't know what to do with it when I'm not using it. It's kinda large, and flimsy, so I can't really put it anywhere. I just leave it laying out in the corner of my room lol. Looks tacky.

I built a frame out of PVC pipe and got a white sheet to cover it, used some white foam core as background, and shop lights on each side. I'll snap a pic of mine and post it up. I wanted something a little more sturdy than a cardboard box and I can easily take mine apart to store it away.

thats what I did, worked great

I did the same thing with pvc pipe. I like it because it's sturdy, and you don't have to glue the pipes together, so it's easy to take down and store... If I find the link for the instructions I used, I'll post it...
