The benefit is better grip. With overhand often times during heavy weights it's really hard to keep hold of the bar. With mixed grip I have no problem holding onto the bar so I can complete the lift.

I use over hand on lower weight and then switch to mixed on heavier weight. I don't like the feeling of mixed because it feels like the bar is uneven a little so i use straps sometimes. (ready for flames)

mixed grip can be dangerous. it is advisable for you to do as much work as possible with an overhand grip. mixed grip puts way too much pressure on the bicep and you are more likely to tear it. assuming you know your grip can handle the weight in your hand (i.e. for a competition lift), I have become a firm believer in using straps for heavy sets.

If you really don't like the mixed grip and are willing to endure some pain, try the hook grip. It hurts but will let you pull double overhand without grip problems.

It's when you wrap your first 3 fingers around your thumb. It hurts like a bitch!!!!

ouchie.. thumbs under the bar, the rest over..like a double overhand, but instead of your thumb being outside the fingers, they're underneath? fuck that. i'd pull my god damn thumb out of the socket
