I'm using Apple Mail with my Exchange account, and while the actual icon in the dock shows I have mail, I don't know unless I check the dock periodically

is there a way (maybe a small script or program I can download?) it can visually notify me I have mail? Maybe something in the menubar or in firefox

    thanks

Well it does chime when you get new mail as well, but I am sure you could write an AppleScript that would display a message to the screen when new mail has arrived.

It will work with Gmail. Gmail supports POP access. Also, if you want a really awesome mail notification (and don't get me wrong, I love Growl), then use Mail.appetizer. Link here (this is the latest beta, it's what you want). It's customizable, has lots of functions, and will allow you to select what mailboxes you want it to use for mail notifications (so it doesn't notify you of spam, etc.).

Besides the audio notifications Mail.app provides, Mail.appetizer should work well for you.

Right, but those settings are the same in any email client, and are not unique to Mail.app. I didn't know they had those config pages, thanks for pointing that out.
