Anybody here do SAMBO?
No, wouldn't mind trying it but there isn't any gyms around here that offer it and don't want to pay another gym fee honestly...
I have trained with a few people who were primarily sambo players. Whole different style/approach to grappling than what I am used to. What is your training background like btw?
1.5 Years of SAMBO, 1 year of Judo, 12 of TKD/4 Karate/3 MT mix.
wasn't aware that it was an acronym...
and no, but I'd love to.
The word "Самбо" (Sambo) is an acronym of САМозащита Без Оружия (SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya), meaning "self-defense without a weapon" in Russian.
well I'll be damned
@ your striking.
Where did you train sambo? How much groundwork do you incorporate? From the training partners I had, they focused very little on technical aspects of the ground game and really just tried to scramble to their feet and give up their back a lot. Even with leg locks, it was a different type of approach, they would dive for leg locks after getting a takedown.
This does happen in bjj too, but generally for tournament strategy it is somewhat looked down upon.
I rolled with Sambo guy once, his take downs were insane, I think he weighed 138 at the time, and would take down guys who were 190 plus with no problems.
AND LOL YOURSELF. My striking is awesome, you poop.
I train it at Valhalla ETC in Santa Barbara, Ca. Groundwork is very prominent. It's like 60/40 ground/standup. Though I compliment it with a healthy regiment of Judo.
My coach has a judo black belt and was offered a brown belt at a Royce Gracie seminar (lol). Our ground work is different from BJJ. It's little subtle differences, but the methodology makes it different. I'm taught to not engage a guard, like instead of fighting in someone's guard, just give it up, and try your approach over again. A lot of it is setting up with takedowns. I use a lot of my judo to take people down with variations on no-gi or very SAMBO specific kinds of throws to set up into submissions. Our SAMBO uses a lot of flow, I know a lot of SAMBO guys who have weird catch wrestling-like things they do, which is bizarre... but we avoid most of that. Theres also a lot of risky giving up position for submission stuff that goes on. If you watch fedor on the ground, he'll give up position for a submission. He's a judo/sambo guy so he doesn't really leglock a lot. My coach is similar, he mostly chokes and arm locks/bar/etc. Leg locks are still a part of the curriculum and used frequently, he just prefers chokes/arms.
Otherwise it's all the same.
Video of your awesome striking?
Nothing that isn't 3-4 years old.
Cool, so brag about something but can't back it up.
LOL this thread is LOL.
