Mine will play some games, won't play others, but when it does play a game, it works flawlessly, while with the other games, it won't even recognize the disc. It seems like everyone I know who has ever had a PS2 has had it start to die on them like this after they've owned it for 5 years or so.
Has anybody in here had success with getting their PS2 back to life?

My brothers did this and he bought himself a new one.

I took his old one and stripped it down and cleaned the laser with alcohol. It's pretty noisy reading disks but works :o

I had to do the laser knob trick on mine but it got to the point where I had to put different marks on the knob for different games. The top I just left off and unscrewed so I could lift the drive lid whenever I wanted to adjust the laser. The top of the disc drive is magnetic so the screws aren't really needed. Eventually most DVD9 games stopped working and I just gave up and bought a slim. I miss the old one since I can't find any mod chips for the slim that I have.

I did this on mine for like three times until it finally stopped working even with realigning. It extended the life of it for like 2 more years.

    Yeah, it won't work forever.

I spent like almost two hours turning that stupid knob before I go so frustrated that I threw the playstation as hard as I could away from my house :o

i was drinking at the same time... so yeah, it did kind of piss me off I couldn't get it working again even though I had done it a few times before :hs:

My brother's stopped working. I opened it up, cleaned out a ton a dust, fiddled with the laser/focusing mechanism and it worked again :dunno:

I regrettably sold it some time later :(

mine stopped reading disks and I tried to fix it but it was gone. I wish I would have known about this fix with the gears cause I traded a ton of old awesome games to gamestop just for a ps2 slim like 5 years ago :ugh:

My launch PS2 with the first PS2 mod-chip still works fine. I gave it to a friend since my PS3 has BC but he apparently still plays it all the time. Guess I was lucky (though the mod chip doesn't work because you need some stupid Game Shark Swap disc)
