This is quickly becoming one of my favorite promotions to watch. Compared to most, the rules are a little strange.

    No Closed guard
No striking the head on the ground
You may elbow or knee only if wearing pads
Headbutts to the body are leagal

There are more, but those are all I recall from off the top of my head.

The standup is just like any other really, but once the fight hits the ground it's amazingly active since you cant stall by closing your guard and you have no fear of being hit in the head, so it's almost like a no-gi grappling match at that point.

Last I saw there were some events on the tracker, its definately worth checking out.

Japan, I'm fairly certain it will never air in America.

I wish to god Shooto would start doing north american PPV

Shooto fighters have such great skill, but I think that the majority of people only like watching heavyweights throwing bombs at each other.

it can be really good, or really boring. because some guys will just stall, and then its stalling with NO punching allowed

there have been some awesome subs in it. the only open guard rule makes guys go for subs like crazy

I can imagine there would be a TON of scrambling. What about half guard? Does that count as a closed guard?

This sounds a lot like sambo rules. If you get thrown do you lose?

hah that would be an embarrasing way to lose: KO (headbutt to body)

From what I understand, they now use the full RINGS: King of Kings rules. That includes rope escapes from submissions like early Pancrase.

I saw someone use them in the 2004 GP... I was waiting for the ref to say something, but when he didn't, I assumed it was legal.
