I got a Coleman Powermate Cordless Rechargable Waxer/Buffer/Polisher for Christmas.. it comes with a terry cloth and synthetic wool. Should this thing be ok to use on my car without messing anything up?

I don't think it is powerful enough to mess anything up.

Ok then my next question is, is there any point in using it? Can I get better results doing it by hand?

It will speed up your waxing. Any kind of buffer will allow you to wax quicker if used properly. I wouldn't come anywhere near that wool pad though even if it is on a buffer such as that.
