I have to renew 9 domains at Godaddy right now and I've just spend the last hour testing out various coupons, and the best one (gdbb776) only gets the price down to $141.94.

I heard name.com gives free private reg. Is that true? Is it hard to switch existing domains (hosted by hostgator) from godaddy to another registrar? Will stuff get fucked up somehow during the process or can I have a smooth seamless move with no downtime and no bullshit anywhere along the line?

So is anywhere else cheaper than godaddy when you include private registration? I use private reg on all my sites :tinfoilhat:

    thanks.

how do they compare to name, namecheap? How much of a PITA is the switching process? I keep hearing GD is "goovery good but expensive." In what ways is GD "good" that other companies are not "good?"

I just called Godaddy's customer support:

Them: How can I help you? Did you want to renew these domains that are in your shopping cart?

    Me: Yes, I hope so.

    Them
: Well it looks like they're $169. But I can give you a discount down to $149.94

Me: lol really, cuz I have a code that gets it down to $141.94

    Them: o rly? what code?

    Me:
    gdbb776.

Them: Oh, huh, yeah that is cheaper, huh.

    Me: yeah.

Them: so you wanna use that one?

Me: no, i want free private reg. Several other registrars, such as name.com offer free private reg. Can you match that?

Them: I can't do that. So you wanna go ahead and renew these now, then?

Me: No. I think I'm gonna call name.com unless you can give me free private reg.

    Them: Sorry.

    :wtf:

I was hoping they would plead like Comcast :mamoru:

actually i just heard you need like 3-4 weeks' notice in order to change registrars at renewal. Damn.

Guess I'll do it next year.

Phillipines registar that I've used for a few domains. Free private whois. The cheapest .com's and .net's I've found. I haven't had to contact support for anything, so I can't give a review on that, but otherwise, they've been good.

    Oh,

    $6.95 .com's
    $5.99 .net's
    $4.95 .co.uk's

plus a ton of other random ones

namecheap.com gives it free for the first year, then it's like $2.99 to renew. Can get .com's for $8.81 with a coupon.

i have 21 domains with name.com and like 5 with namecheap

    name.com ftw.
namecheap is gay cause you have to preload your acc with money, and mine has like 12 cents in it that i cant touch.

    WTF, no you don't. lol.

Namecheap here, for life, I don't give a shit if I have to pay an extra $2/Domain for keeping my mind straight. GoDaddy and others can fuck off. (Especially Dreamhost).

It's just a business expense anyhow, $7 for a absolute SHIT domain company, or $9 for a legit one,... yea I will go with the latter.

Not to mention, with over 50 domains at Namecheap, you get some hefty renewal discounts if you call them ;)
