a buddy of mine was messing around with my new 10-22 this weekend, and really liked it. He currently has the kit lens (whatever it is - 18-55 or so, i guess?).

any recommendations for a good "under $600" wide angle? He has whatever is comparable to the Canon XTi ... the Nikon SLR that's ~$600.

Thats about enough of that shit out of you.

The reality of it is that ANY DSLR made in the past 2-3 years can produce FANTASTIC pictures.

Will my pictures suddenly suck if I had a D40? Not more than they do already...

Will my pictures be SUPER AWESOME! if I trade my D80 for a 40D? Absolutely NOT.

Get over the fucking gay ass measurebating.

    As to the OP's question:

The Tokina 12-24 is within the price range, wide enough, and gets good enough reviews, that you should add it to your short list:

i'm talking about the fact that he can't autofocus with that shitty body.

I'd get sigma 10-22 because it goes to 10.

but I have no clue if it will autofocus with the D40x

I could be wrong, but i don't think any 3rd party lens company (e.g. sigma, tamron) makes AF-S lens at this moment. I was also looking for a wider range of AF-S lenses than nikon is offering, but I haven't had any success.

IMO, manual focusing isn't that bad if you have a D40x. I think it's more of a psychological comfort of just having the autofocus option if i wanted it.

You can autofocus with that shitty body.

You just can't use lenses that require external focusing motors. Which is NOT as big of a deal as you're making it out to be.

90% of the newer lenses out now are AF-S.

And in all reality, anyone who's in the market for a D40x isn't going to be looking for 1980 Nikon glass.

is that Tokina 12-24 an AF-S lens?

i know he's not going to want to manually focus.

No. But it's the best really wide angle for less than 600....

The 50mm was the most popular Nikon lens with FILM cameras.

Now that it's a 75mm, it's not nearly as nice.

Things like the 17-50 2.8 have just about surpassed it in quality, not to mention the convience of having that quality in a zoom....

Ive been using a Sigma 10-20mm for my Nikon D40 for months now without any problems, and yes, it autofocus's just fine.

    me wants 10mm

stupid Nikon not able to make a 10mm as good as their 12-24, I'd be willing to shell $ for a 10-20 Nikon under f4 (like f2) or something like that.
