anyone ever screw around with these? would they be worth adding when working traps and lats?
I've tried overhead shrugs with light weight, moderate weight, heavy weight, high rep, low rep, explosive reps, controlled reps, and the only thing I've succeeded in in doing them is looking like a total douche.

Slurpster - try them out anyway, exercises that are shitty for some could be great for others.
If you end up not liking them, you can always add some trap slaps to your routine.
I occasionally do some hanging shrugs. Not that great of an exercise, I tend to do them more to work on mobility than anything else.
planning on trying the overhead shrugs tonight, should be interesting. just looking for different exercises to hit my traps
the hanging shrugs i was gonna try to use as a rehab exercise for my shoulder blades. they tend to wing out at the bottom pretty bad. i've been trying to strengthen my serratus anterior to improve the winging in the middle, but now i'm noticing the bottom winging especially on shrugs and yates rows when i go heavy. could be due to paralysis of some of the muscles, hopefully its cause i'm still weak in that area(lats, traps, rhomboids, etc).
what's the difference between shrugs and hanging shrugs?
hangings shrugs aka overhead scapular depression is basically a lat shrug. grab a chin up bar with an over hand grip and try to pull your body weight up while keeping your arms straight. can also be done on a cable/pulley weight set up with a lat pull bar.

Maybe because overhead shrugs aren't for building huge traps, genius. They are for improving upward rotation of the scapula.

a. look like a complete douche
b. improve upward scapular rotation
c. slightly impinge shoulders
d. off chance of getting a decent trap workout, with an even higher probability of getting a half assed delt workout.
