I'm thinking of building a new gaming rig (probably on the cheap). It seems like prices are pretty ridiculously low these days, and I haven't upgraded my machine in several years.

I don't even know what the latest socket configurations are, though. Nor what I should be looking for. Dual-core, quad-core? AMD? Intel?

on the cheap, go with a core2duo setup

for very cheap, i guess go with an amd setup, but i'll take intel over amd. it might cost a little more, but you get more out of it

i'm not into gaming at all, but i've heard that quadcore can sort of be too much

buying amd right now, even if a couple bucks cheaper, is like saying "no I don't want a brand-new ferrari for $15k, I'd rather get this shitty hyundai for $13k"

Go Intel. Go Core2Duo or Core2Quad.

Interesting. At one point, AMD was the preference for gamers. I haven't been following the processor wars for the past few years.

Can anyone recommend the best "bang for your buck" intel? Also, are there various sockets they're using these days, or is there a standard?

Lastly... any recommendations for a video card? Is PCI-Express the default now? (I still have an AGP card)

I'm looking for the best value possible. I don't care if my shit's the latest and greatest.

CPU: E8400 is probably the best bang for buck Intel CPU right now
Mobo: Intel, Gigabyte, or Abit are what you want.
    RAM: DDR2 800MHz+
    GPU: GeForce 8800GT-S, 9600GT, 9800** (PCI-Express x16)
Optical drives are cheap and take your pick, ~$30/35
Hard Drive: Seagate 7200.11 and choose your size

(** = whatever model you want to pay for)
