Finally looking at getting one in the next couple of months and was wondering if anyone here has heard about anything new coming from Canon or Nikon. Or, are the XTi and the D40 the only offers till the end of the year or next year.

Any idea if XTi features (large LCD, dust removal system, 10MP) will make it to other models. I'm leaning towards entry level, but if Canon were to offer something better than in a D30 successor :dunno: it might be worth the couple of hundred difference.

The D40 seems nice and it fit me more comfortably than the XTi, but I wonder if the need for autofocus lenses will be an expensive trade-off. And I know that MP doesn't really matter unless the prints will be printed, will something with 8 or 10MP be better than the 6MP offered on the D40?

if something new comes out for canon, it will probably be in the more expensive price brackets

I don't like how the back LCD display is used for shutter/aperture settings and such and the one command wheel is still something I don't care for. take a look at the d80 if you can.

I know that it's different from the high end DSLRs and most film ones, but I kind of liked it when I had my S30 and S50 where I would set the manual through the LCD and then take my shot. Personally I don't know if I would like it on the newer ones, but if they are swtiching to that there must be a reason rather than to frustrate customers. Or, maybe becuase more people will be coming from P&S with the lower price levels.

That's what I was thinking to, either something like an 40D or the like if they were to keep the current naming conventions going. But, maybe it would fall into the high end of the 30D price at the moment. I'm trying to decide if an entry level body is better to start or to go for a better body to start and not worry about other features that will be lacking, spot metering, better sensor, better image quality.

No one knows fuck-all about what's going to be released, and all the speculating is from measurebating fanboys.

    We'll know in March.

There is what thom hogan thinks for Nikon:

a D3h probably full frame (if that's what he means by "big") or really high resolution (I tought nikon wanted to stay away from full frame)

Yeah, I was just wondering where I could find stuff like this out since I didn't want to get something now only to have something better the next month. I really don't know what the release cycles for the DSLRs were.

just be careful. as it is with any new products there might be glitches or quality control issues if you grab the first ones off the assembly line...

The XTi is going to have like 35 fucking megapixles next year.

Sony and Nikon are going to merge, then stop making cameras. Soon you will be able to buy a Nikon cd player for your car.

Release cycles are historically 18~24 months depending on the product segment, but they seem to be getting shorter as competition increases. Most DSLR releases happen around PMA in the spring or Photokina in the fall.

Beyond that, everything else is just speculation and an unhealthy dose of wishful thinking.
