I came across a D80 with the 18-135mm lens (and some other lens) on ebay that's local to me. It's for sale through a pawn shop for $500 (right now) and they're willing to let me pick it up. My question is whether there's anything I should be aware of before I make an offer or a bid.

    Thanks

Try and find out how many actuations there are on the shutter.

Ask about scratches or defects, on the body or sensor.

If you get this in writing from the seller, and use Paypal with your bank account, you should be okay if there's anything wrong with it when you recieve it.

Make sure they have a return policy. If they'll let you, go outside and take a picture of the bright blue sky at F16, any issues should be clear on the LCD.

Well the cool thing is that I can go look at it, it's at a pawn shop across town. The guy's got mad feedback too, 5000 ish with 99% positive.

I bought my 20D from a pawn shop. It had about 8k actuations, but also came with receipt, warranty card, and camera bag. The sensor had a bristle from a blow duster stuck on it and was a pain to remove but I eventually got it out. I bet that's why the previous owner sold it :mamoru:

I just checked and the auction is literally the camera and lens only, no charger, no battery, no nothing.

    I'll pass. :hs:

I already have a rebelXT that I don't care for very much, thus the D80

oh it's certainly not because of the gear, I just have used a D80 and I preferred it - the feel, the whole thing. The XT isn't mine either, it's my mom's and I want my own DSLR now.
