I've inherited a luger and I've been trying to poke around from the proof and manufacturer marking to find a date along with the serial number, but I cannot narrow it down to a year.

    thanks guys.

i was going to tell you last night but was playing monopoly.
the manufature is on the top of the luger on the bolt. mine is a s/42 which is mauser, later mausers were just 42.

the year of manufacture with be on the top luger just behind where the barrel connects

the top of the bolt says BYF on top behind the barrel says 42 and in addition to the serial number 55 is stamped all over the gun.

There is also a P.08 marking on the side and the safety has only one label of "GESICHERT".

and there are 3 proof markings on the frame behind the barrel two having the number 135 under them and then the third one also appearing on the barrel. they appear to be number 46 or 47 from here

    http://www.gunsworld.com/p08/p08_proof4_us.html

and then there is the serial number stamped in at least 3 positions and a marking on some sort under the barrel that looks similar to a lower case cursive L.

Also the holster has a very similar and faint proof marking as the barrel the gun with "WaA195" written below it and "EPF 40" stamped as well.

Each of the 2 magazines are different as well one is blued one is not. The blued one has a bunch of proof markings some similar to the ones on the gun. I'll get the luger cleaned up tomorrow and some better looks at all the marking.

At the very least I just want to make sure its not a "piece of history" before I go shooting it.
