I just started learing this HTML and a friend showed me this site:
    http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

it has step by step instructions and code examples. The cool part is that a few chapters in they give you a link to a page that shows the HTML code on the left side of the window and how the page would look in a browser on th right side. cool stuff. I also got HTML for The World Wide Web by Elizabeth Castro. This book was also recomended to me by a lot of people as a good book to start with.

Designing with Web Standards is an excellent book, especially if you're just starting out with web design. Better to get the good habits started early rather than wait till you've developed bad habits and try to unlearn them...
