Is there a radical size difference that would prevent GM putting the 170 horse 2.4 Ecotec in an Aveo?

16 views and no responses? I guess the answer is "No".

I'm sure it's been considered, maybe even done. Just not by anyone here.

A guy on ClubGP.com in a modded GT got smoked by an Aveo once, but never talked to the driver about mods. :

I'm not thinking about hot rodding an Aveo. I'm wondering why GM hasn't stuck the Ecotec in an Aveo and gone import hunting.

It seems like classic muscle cars were all bottom of the barrel shit boxes with too much torque, and when it comes to GM it doesn't get more shitbox than the Aveo.

I'm thinking the 2.4/5-speed combo can't be significantly more expensive to build than the 1.6, and in a car that small it shouldn't get much worse mileage, particularly if you change the gear ratios to lessen the effects of a 70% increase in power.

If it's not a lot more expensive, and it gets close to the same mileage, it must be a size/fitment issue, right?

Could be. What cars share the Aveo's platform?

It could be that they're afraid it'd compete with the Cobalt...:dunno:

the aveo is a "cheap econobox" that's designed to compete with suzukis/kias/hyundais...

the cobalt is supposed to be the import-tuning friendly vehicle... And it's a failure, imo.

    That would make sense.

    A ~$13,000 shit-box that's faster than their $18,000 SS/Sport/whatever-they're-calling-the-NA-SS-Sedan would be a problem.

I think that's more a symptom of GM's failure than anything, but it would certainly explain the failure to build what I consider a no-brainer.

  8. I agree, Gm is so conserned with competing against itself but sells 3-4 vehicles with the exact same options/perfomance/comfort. Its kinda dumb.

A beefed Aveo would be a blast. If done right, it could bump heads with the Civic SI and other similar "sport compacts". Besides, with an Ecotec under the hood, bolting on a GMPP S/C kit would make it a beast. :eek3:

The Aveo is built in Korea, using only parts built in Korea.

it's not that it can't be done, but that it wont be done. Would probably upset the CAFE too.

This reminds me of the old 3 cylinder turbo Sprint.

My buddy used to have one and he pulled the vacuum line off the boost controller and ran about 25 PSI for about three weeks. He said he would pull stock 5.0L Mustangs at the time. After 3 weeks he lifted the head.

.... I would consider picking one up and replacing the head bolts with studs then see how long it will last at 20 +psi

    I didn't know that.

If the drivetrain is a Korea sourced part that would explain it. It wouldn't make fiscal sense to ship ecotec's to Korea for assembly.
