i'm thinking about picking up a nice spas-12 shotgun i have an opportunity to buy. does anybody have any experience with them? I know they're expensive, but are they worth it, or are they just hyped up because of the title "military shotgun"?

I think they're sort of the famous evil looking shotgun and collectable because of that. I'd probably get a benelli m3 if you wanted selective action or just a saiga 12 sent to tromix if all you want is a really mean looking auto shotgun. I hear some of the parts are expensive and hard to find on the spas like the shock buffer and the spas is chock full o' parts.

edit: oo here is a good link on the spas http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=204361

Like Soy said I'de be concerned with availability of parts if something breaks. I personally would go the SAIGA route with Tromix treatment and still be under the SPAS's cost.

I've read a bunch about the mechanism that allows you to switch from automatic to pump action being unreliable. Don't have any firsthand experience, but the idea of switching from one action to another seems overly complicated to me for a combat shotgun and I can see why others would question reliablity.

Not worth the money IMO, but definitely an intimidating looking gun.

Depends on what you want it for.

Is it a collectors item? yes. High "cool' factor? yes. Practical? Not at all.
    It's big, heavy and bulky.

If you're looking for a shooter, I'd go with an M1/M3.

There are a couple things to consider if you're thinking about picking up a SPAS 12: Does it have the push button safety? The old lever type had a recall as some of them would discharge if a round was chambered and you flipped the safety to "fire." The new safeties are impossible to find now.
You'll want to strip the reciever and check the rear area for damage. Buffers wear out and disintegrate, if not replaced there may be damage there.

Bottom line: If you're looking for a collectable, the price is decent (800-1000 is the normal range), it's in good shape, and it has the updated safety, I'd consider buying it.
