I am in the process of applying to several departments here in California. My question and concern is; how much of an impact can an iffy credit report have on an otherwise spotless background? Iffy meaning bankruptcy 6 years ago and a few late pays along the way since.

Generally, larger departments are more likely to overlook things like that if your background is otherwise clear, as they have more positions to fill. Smaller departments with only a few slots, who can afford to be more picky, may see it as a sign of irresponsibility and weakness for corruption. If the place you're looking is a 200+ man dept, i'd guess you'd still be in the running.
