I know some guy from alaska on here is in the coast guard. Anyone else? I'm looking to go into the USCG once I finish school and go through their officer program. Just curious about what kind of assignments people got, what OCS was like, what basic training was like, so on, and how happy you are that you took up the call.

I'm an Operations Specialist First Class and I've been in for 6.5 years. Its a pretty exciting and dull job. lol One tour you'll be saving a lot of lives as a search and rescue radio operator or coordinator and the next you'll be stuck in a back room accounting for secure COMMS keymat and equipment.

check out the sticky thread for some links to Coast Guard rate (job) schools and OCS/Academy life. Kinda being brief, but I'm about to head out to the gym, feel free to fire away w/ more questions.

    My units thus far:

Boot Camp > USCG Cutter Hamilton > TRACEN Petaluma, CA TC "A" school > Group Moriches, NY > Group/Airsta Port Angeles, WA

    thanks for the response.

that's a worry of mine going into the USCG as a business major that they'll want to give me an office job, which I don't want and is why I'm going into the USCG

I am in the process of enlisting in the USCG.

My recruiter wants me to go in for MK since I work on yachts now and I've been through school and have numerous mechanical/eletrical certifications.

I am also interested in the Law Enforcement side of things which he said the MK are cross-trained in.

I would love any insight possible.

I'm also throwing around the idea of becoming a GM. Guns and shooting is a hobby of mine and I'm really interested in that area also.

My recruiter (at the time, long story, bad driving record, back up for application in April) told me he was going to have me on some kind of plan to get me in quick. Boot camp, about 4 weeks later have me in A-school, then I'd be reservist for a year.... at the end of that year I would be able to choose my location.

    Sound like BS?

    Things have changed.

I will be going in as a reservist (MK).

My physical is on April 23rd.

Assuming I pass (I will) I will have boot camp and A-school back to back and reserve in Cape Canaveral.
