i know i need a better flash than the one on my xti.

    i can't warrant spending $230+ on the 430EX flash. I don't want the lower-end one, because it doesn't move.

i went on B&H, and they have a ton of flashes for under $100.

i'm not making $$ with my camera, i just want to take better shots. what should i be looking at?

Is it important to you to have e-ttl? does it have to be new?

i don't know a whole lot about it, but isn't e-ttl really nice to have? i would think i would want it, but don't know what it tacks onto the price.

new is always nice, but would consider used

you aren't going to find a flash with e-ttl for much cheaper.... if you don't mind manually setting your flash, you can pick up a vivitar 285V for about 80 bucks new.

I just spent ~240 on my nikon sb-600.

Well worth the price. Having a flash that works with your camera is priceless.

look around for a 430ex second hand if you cant afford it new. You want ettl, unless you want to set the flash before every shot.

420ex is fine, it can be bounced etc, but can only be used in full auto without a master to control it.

yeah, it's the EX. i'm really only interested in one that I can bounce for now - it'll let me learn how to utilize that first, then i'll buy something nicer when i'm not a n00b anymore (god only knows when that'll be)
