I love The Onion. Come to think of it, now that I don't have cable, I actually do get most of my news from The Onion.

I have always appreciated The Onion's satirical comic genius. I was amazed by how many people of FB saw it, and mistook it for a 'real/legitimate' (read: non-satirical) news story...

It's hilarious how many people actually take The Onion seriously. I mean a few of their videos might seem believable, but how the fuck do people watch a video like this and actually think its real.

Okay, so I subscribe on my iPhone... So hysterical! I was watching the one last night about the lil boy who shot the home-invader. LOL

Kid: well, I know where dad keeps the shotgun because I play with it a lot, and so I pointed and shot his knees out.
    Reporter: Good for you!
Kid: Then he kept trying to get away, so I shot his jaw off. Then I rubbed his blood all over my shirt for show and tell in school.

Yes, it is obviously a joke newscast. As this really happening would repulse us instead of making us laugh.

    Ohhhhhh.... I see

So do I admit now, how stupid I am or do I just pretend I thought it was a "serious" show :squint:

Thank you very much, CoCo - for pointing out the obvious

idk what you are trying to say here..

if you knew it was a joke, why are you upset?
i thought it was pretty funny

they arent actually making fun of gays, they are making fun of how stupid it is to call something gay

All I was saying was - at first, I thought it was serious. Or had some kind of serious intent. I didn't know what the "Onion" was lol

Then, CoCo was like "It's a joke newscast" and that never sank in until he mentioned it - "pointing out the obvious" though not obvious (at the time) to me.

I's not upset about it. Thought it was something real or serious at first, which is why I originally put I thought it was in bad taste. Now that I know better, I was just trying to laugh at my own stupidity for not seeing it that way the first time around.

Oh, you are so very welcome. I know that "some people" can have a very hard time distinguishing between a national ad campaign targeting the anti-queer socialization of today's youth versus a skit on a notoriously satirical comedy forum. I know, I know, although it is usually meant to be funny, the purpose of satire is not primarily humour in itself, so much as an attack on something of which the author strongly disapproves, using the weapon of wit--and "some people" aren't as well trained in the use of their weapon. ;)

And to further clarify, as to ensure no confusion, by "some people", I mean you.
    :wavey:

However, you really shouldn't feel bad or the least bit alone in your misunderstanding. There is a whole list of people who gained notoriety (read: ridicule) by taking The Onion stories for truth. :bigthumb: Remember back in 2004, when MSNBC's Deborah Norville sited an Onion story as a genuine article? Or when Columnist Ellen Makkai used a story from The Onion Harry to support her belief that the Harry Potter books recruit children into Satanism. Or, my personal favorite, when Fred Phelps in posted The Onion article "1998 Homosexual-Recruitment Drive Nearing Goal" on his God Hates Fags website as proof that gay people were indeed actively trying to recruit others.

Oh. I honestly thought you were attacking me in your first post. You know, there was an interview with the the president of The Onion in which he spoke about just this thing... I'll google it and post.

Sean Mills, President of The Onion, said angry letters about their news parody always carried the same message.

Having not been familiar with The Onion and seeing this subject matter, which may be personal to you, you failed to see the humor in it and took offense.

Like we said earlier, a lot of people see Onion articles/podcasts and think they are real. (This one in particular was all over Facebook.) You're honestly not alone. But you do honestly have to laugh at yourself in these situations. :mamoru: Jimmy Fallon did the same thing, and then laughed at himself weeks later when he realized what The Onion was.

I know, right... I totally took the post differently when I first read it.

Being in a vastly different time-zone than most active people here, I'm always debating between whether I should read an entire thread before reacting/posting, or reacting to every post that so moves me. Typically, I opt for the latter, but it might have been better to read this thread in it's entirety before posting.

    :p Oh hindsight...

I know - I'm not the brightest crayon in the box :mamoru:

Typical for me to make others misunderstand what I say - nothing unusual for me :) Have been known to cause a fuss now and again, because I don't think before I speak - or type
