I think I'm going to set some money aside this christmas and grab a DSLR, where do ya'll think I should start with $1000 budget? I want an alright starter kit (a zoom lens, a prime lens, flash and a bag). Where would ya'll suggest I start looking if I'm not going to have all ny moneys together by black friday? Used or new?

    i would go used.
    30d $400
    tamron 17-50 $325
    50 1.8 $85
    550ex or 430ex $200
that should put you right around a grand. if you can swing a little more i would upgrade it to the 50 1.4 or 85 1.8. you will also need a bag/case for them, cf card, batteries for the flash.

I was thinking about a 30D, I shot for a little while with a 20D and I liked how it sat in my hand. I love my minolta 50 1.4, I think I use it 90% of the time I'm shooting film, but I seriously doubt I'm going to be to afford an af version anytime soon. Anybody here shot with a 30D ever?

The 30d is a really nice camera. They are a little old, so just be picky about the one you pick up.

If you're used to a 50mm on a film body, you're going to want a 35mm 1.8 on your DSLR, due to the cropped field of view. But of course that's going to be more expensive than the 50mm 1.8...

just wondering. have you thought about using a good prime for people now and holding off on the flash? i've gotten some good shots of people with a prime on 1.8-2.8

just a thought. a flash eats in to that $1,000 :)
