What is your newsletter interest level?

  1. I'd write some articles. Definitely would read it.

  2. I'd just read it.

Any thoughts of a once a month OT CP newsletter - stickied for the month (or maybe a few weeks). Maybe have 2-3 meaty articles from the local experts here (could be on ANYTHING - whatever your specialty is). Maybe an interview section (learn more about your favorite CP posters). Compilation of tricks & tips (either posted within a certain date range in the CP forum or brewed fresh for the newsletter). Topics on computer industry news? FAQs of the week? (which could be compiled into the master FAQ.)

For some reason, I'm seeing this as more work than its worth. But I toss it out to see if:

    1. Anyone interested in participating?
    2. Anyone interested in actually reading it?

I'd be in to read for sure, and I'd write some articles when I have some time (pretty busy right now).

I'd definantly be down for this. I could write some mini-articles, but I don't have near the Hands-on expertise that some of these people do, but a lot more than the average user.

Me too. A lot of us really put a lot of time and effort into that place. :wtc: I'd still be putting a LOT of time into that place if it were still around. :hs:

If I had the cash, I'd pick it backup... but i don't have the flow to take care of the domain and hosting, plus the vBB license.

Just as a side note: I used to write a weekly mailing list for Detroit Red Wings fans. We had a weekly recap of the team, stats, and the fan favorite weekly trivia. I had the list going for about 3 years and in that time it gathered over 350 members.

i have a bunch of platform specific articles that i have written that i'm sure somebody could get some use out of. I also work for http://www.ittoolbox.com and have good resources at my reach here. Especially for articles and top news feeds, etc. I'd definately pitch in some effort, and count me in for reading too. [although i did vote for the porn option though :o ]

I would like to do some articles too (web dev related most likely - although I can think of some silly ones too like making hard drive clocks).

I would take a bet an article even on what you do in the tech industry would be interesting for others...

I'm about to reach critical mass with all the projects I have going. I don't want to abandon this idea though, but I'm not sure I can drive it (at least not this month and probably not next month). If bandwidth is all that is needed, I could round some up at rsbauer.com. If someone wants to volunteer to take the lead, please do! You may be starting up something great! (no pressure :)) If no one steps up, then I'd take a crack at it, but it probably wouldn't be till December. I think it would be cool to see something sooner, if possible.

Is there any graphic designers in the house that would be interested in designing a layout for this?

I'm thinking the next step would be to figure who is interested in writing (sort of done already) and scheduling their articles as well as schedule other pieces to include in not only the first issue but future issues.

I have no problem stepping up to the plate.

I was Editor-in-Chief for T-L.com.. would be willing to take the same responsibility here.

Would be VERY cool to have someone write up a nice ASP or HTML page...Links to stories and OT on the side bar, nice logo at the top bar, and top stories in main body.. (I love frames. ).. Just a thought.

Who else would like to step up to the plate with me as far as management and layout?

If we do something like this we should do it right and have a face on the web away from OT so other people could see it. Not a big enough audience here to really make it worth it. If we had some good articles then we would get some traffic for sure...I would imagine a simple PHPnuke / Postnuke site would be suffice and just give people in CP that want to contribute posting accounts.

ill help u datacomguy. i could also run it off of my cyberbullets.net server, or whatnot (i can upgrade my pkg to 10gb/month if needed).

we could use php/mysql w/ css/html or what not (tables are acceptabled).

the slashcode is free, but then i dont know perl :(

i think this is a great idea and experience (as i said b4) for us who dont have much experience.

If you are looking for a slash type system in PHP try PHPNuke.

    PHPNuke is free, isn't it?

Yeah - One of the Nuke setups would definately be cool, and simple.

hmm... [php|post]Nuke wasn't really part of what I was thinking. I was thinking more along the lines of something as simple as just a newsletter. I wasn't thinking along the lines as a "news" site (such as slashdot). There's a TON of places to get news and tech news. But I was thinking the newsletter would sum up what we on OT do, have done, and tricks, tips, and problems that keep coming month after month, etc. I'm not going to say Nuke won't cut it, but can it sustain interest? I'm just wondering about the format...

For a community site, either of the Nukes are a great choice...
