Im turning 21 in a week, that means handgun time. Im thinkin springfield mil-spec 1911. I want a 1911 that is a good platform to build on for 600 bucks.

I read the other thread and will check that out, any other recommendations.

mil-spec would be a great 1911 to start on for around $600.

but, depending on what you want to add you might consider the Loaded :dunno:

can always get a used one :dunno: its up to you. the milspec would be a good jumping off platform - especially if you're in the market for a moderately priced 1911 to mod down the road.

the only thing is, depending on what mods you add, you might be better off getting the loaded :dunno:

RIA frames are decent well made frames, not too sure about the slides as compared to others. Mine ran me 330 before tax and background check.

Personally my RIA and my colt have about the same slide/frame fit. (The colt is old ~1918 pre-A1)

Pretty much your run of the mill mil-spec 1911 frame.

I actually spent some cash and bought upgrades from the trigger to the hammer for my RIA and everything in between (parts should be here by saturday.) I'll probably end up doing barrel and recoil spring next time I get inspired as well as a combat thumb safety. Just a fun little side project to have going on. The gun was plenty reliable and accurate for me when I bought it.

Just make sure to inspect them first and ask opinions, I've heard mixed things, though the general opinion is they are decent. I am more than happy with mine for the price. Just make sure it suites your needs.

Just saw this on STI's website, looks like their copying Barrett's tactics:

Q.Will the recent California Microstamping Bill affect California specific products?
    A. UPDATE We will be suspending all shipments of guns to California effective October 13, 2007. This includes everyone from civilians to Law Enforcement.

Hopefully some more of the major manufacturers will follow suit and force our LEO's to speak out against these new laws.

I guess its the thought that counts but I can't imagine they really had any volume of LE sales there to begin and it will probably harm customers who wanted to get a gun before the ban went into effect.

When I went to Turners the other day they were telling customers to buy buy buy because what they have in the cases is all.

It could just be a sales tactic, but I did hear that.

With the spartan, it's got a considerable amount of already modded parts from STI. The only things I could possibly imagine is to put a ambi thumb safety and S&A magwell. The gun comes pretty tricked out from the factory for under 600 bux.

If don't know too much about STI, they are a custom 1911 and 2011 pistol maker. They deal in high end Race guns for competition.

I hear good things about them.

Since they use an Armcor (RIA) frame for the Spartan, like you said it is already modded decently. Good starter gun, but if you want the pleasure of doing the work and upgrades yourself, I'd look to a different source for a basic mil-spec 1911.

budsgunshop.com has a Para 1911 compact size (just guessing) in coyote brown for 575 or black for 595. i had a chance to handle one in a store and they seem pretty sturdy.

STI not selling to CA isn't going to change anything. If, on the other hand, Glock, HK, Springfield, Beretta, etc (ie, ALL the big handgun manufs) stuck by a decision to not sell to CA LEO, you would see some changes, but that isn't going to happen.

ALso, someone should educate gun companies about the fact that the earliest the microstamping will actually have to happen is, AT THE EARLIEST, 2023.

So get all guns owners to write to GLOCK, HK, Springfield, Beretta, etc saying they will no longer do business with them so long as they continue to sell to an unfriendly gun state FTW?

On second thought, we'd probably be labeled terrorists that are trying to disarm LEO's. :o

Yup. Also, gun companies are out to make money, pure and simple. If all but one stopped selling, it would fail completely. You really would have to get all of them to simply stop sales to LEO. Of course, the underhanded way to do this would be to amend the microstamping bill that requires that even LEO guns go through that process :o

I wonder if that would violate ant-trust laws.

It isn't a trust though, it is a collective boycott of a region. They wouldn't be doing this to make money, they would be doing this to assert their position on a topic.
