BMW's N63 Twin Turbo 4.4 V8 that BMW is trying to convince us makes 400 crank horsepower :bowrofl: yes only 50 more than the n/a version :ugh2:
I expect dyno-tuning to find this makes 30 more crank, and a chip to yield 500 horsepower without any modifications.

Yeah because a turbo should always be used to boost power by 100hp + :ugh:

What on earth is wrong with adding 50hp with a couple of small turbos so there is no lag?

bmw is notorious for underpromoting their cars real horsepower... theres a reason a 135i can beat an new v8 m3 in the 1/4...the turbo 6 in the 1 and 2 series puts out a fair amount more hp than is claimed

They are pretty small turbos though.

Adding a turbo is cheap too. I bet it didn't cost massive amounts of cash to develop.

If they really wanted to, they could have added a huge turbo. Just because its a turbo model doesn't mean it should have a huge one in it.

:ugh: it's an entirely new platform buddy, and it raises teh cost to consumer, which BMW knows it shouldn't do without just reason

We're not talking about ethics here, we're talking about capability. The engine isn't putting out the most power it can, therefore it is under-tuned. That doesn't mean it's bad to do that -- that's not even the question.

I am implying it is. why charge the customer for x and give him .7*X?

Having tuned my Passat to make 25% more power and 33% more torque than it came with (which sounds really impressive until you find out it only came with 150hp), I know the answer to this one: because the most powerful engine isn't necessarily what the customer is paying for. Reliability and driveability are also important. No matter what I do to my engine, I can't get it to stop hiccupping when I take my foot off the gas the wrong way, and that's because of the extra boost pressure it produces now. Sure, the factory engineers could make it work (case in point, the Audi TT), but that would also make it cost substantially more.

hahah. I don't know; for what BMW will be charging buyers of this car equipped with the n63, I am sure it wouldn't kill them to apply the same formula they did to the N54 to get that motor nice and smooth; that engine is at 100hp/L.

100hp/L? :dunno: Maybe they're scared of getting in a hp/L contest with Honda. God knows BMW would pull some cool tricks, and then Honda would just roll out a new 2L S2000 with an 11tybillion RPM redline, and the game would be over.

the N54 is rated at 100hp/L and some say its factory undertuned so it may actually make more. there's no race, dude, it's just BMW should deliver more for teh engine size/money they charge.

Then maybe 100hp/L is just some magic number for BMW. I dunno.

Tuned version is confirmed for next M5 engine.
engine premiers in the X6 SAC, and yeah will be the US base motor for the 6 and 7 series.
and it'll get around to probably replacing the V8 for teh x5, with a higher tuned version being the 4.8si version
