outside of aesthetics, i can't justify spending nearly double for a billet lower :dunno: please tell me you're throwing something nice on top, any ideas?

The only two pieces that will be cheap are the stock and trigger to start off with. I will upgrade those later in the year :o

What's the benefit of the MUR > regular upper? I know the basics of AR's but the MUR is outside my knowledge area.

I actually like my a2 stock over my magpul collapsable stock, so i can't complain on the stock, but yes, get a geissele or something on there

i believe it is because most are cast while the VLTOR is CNC'd

I think the benefit to the MUR + Free Floating that is if something breaks you aren't out $650 for the full Monolithic. Rather $220 for the MUR if it breaks or $300 for a nice rail.

Sure they look hot together, but it isn't cheap.

Popular opinion is that with a ff rail system you get more heatsinking from the handguards from the barrel nut attachment than you do with the monolithic uppers. No doubt they look sexy but I can't convince myself that I need them or that its a better choice for me.

    that looks hot.

For my next AR I really want to have a custom-engraved lower, tho.

Most are machined from a forging which is roughly the shape of the finished product. Which from a purely mechanical standpoint means the VLTOR is going to be slightly inferior in strength.
