I want to buy an amp for my component speakers. My deck says it puts out 21 watts rms per channel. Would an amp add on to that power, as in a 50 watt per channel amp making the total 70 watts? Or would 50 watts be the total output?

You would not run both amps. Only one or the other. If you buy a 50wpc outboard amp you will have 50wpc at your disposal.

    XR250rdr is right...

The deck only puts out 21 watts/channel when you are running the speakers directly off the deck. If you're running the speakers off the amp, then all your deck is doing is feeding the amp with the audio signal.
