I recently bought an Elemental Designs 11Ov.2 Subwoofer from a friend for a good price and bought a Hifonics Amp to power it, since the amp can run at 1Ohm.

Now, I've never done this before, so don't laugh at me for trying and asking simple questions :)

Anyway, the 11Ov.2 is a dual 2Ohm, so to run it at 1Ohm, It seems I need to wire it in parallel, according to the diagram provided by eD

    My questions are:
    1) what gauge wiring do I need to run from the amp to the sub box and what gauge from the terminal in the sub box to the speakers?

    2) How do I splice the wiring? Do I just twist the ends together? Solder? or is there something that the pros do?

Any help would be truly appreciated :)

for the speaker wire 12-16 guage is fine, and use the same guage for amp to box and box to speakers, and yes you can just strip the wire and secure it into the terminals. make sure its in there tight or you will have to take it apart to put it back on and its a pain in the ass.
