Well here's my issue. I have two pistols with good holsters for each. They are a Glock 19 with a Surefire x300 and a Dan Wesson 1911 The G19 is what I would consider my primary carry and house gun but I can't find defensive ammo for it right now where I live. I can find Speer Golddots for the 1911 so I'm guessing I should switch to it but I have more training time with the G19.

So what do you think? Gun I'm better with using lesser ammo or gun I'm not as familiar with using good ammo?

I'd rather go with the gun I am familiar with and use FMJ than carry a gun I was not confident with loaded in good JHP. I guess my thinking is I'd like a hit with FMJ over a miss with JHP, if the gun difference really made that much of a difference.

What do you mean by 'lesser ammo'? Golden Sabres? Some Winchester 'Personal Protection' JHPs from WalMart? or just some plain old FMJ plinking ammo? If it's at least some sort of HP ammo, I'd probably just run with it until I could get some Gold Dots. If it's FMJ, I don't think I would use it as a defense ammo and certainly not in the home :noes:

I'm talking 115gr FMJ 9mm versus 185gr Speer Golddot JHP

unless you shot somebody, probably shouldnt have used the last couple mags worth of defense ammo you had.

I've been stationed in Europe for the last three years so I'm trying to build my ammo stockpile from the ground up

Let me try saying this another way. No store up here has any 9mm JHP in stock.

I'd take FMJ in a gun I can shoot versus HP in a gun I can't.

In addition to what everyone else has said about using the firearm with which you are most familiar- also consider that the magazine capacity and reliability of the 19 are important.

You could always get a buddy to ship you some ammo via air mail or another carrier :dunno:

There's Alaska Tactical on Muldoon, Wild West Guns off of 76th, and a shitload of other places if you're in ANC proper.

Eielson, Wainwright, Greely, Elemendorf or Fort Rich?

Alaska Ammo does free shipping to ANC, I think because he lives here. He's on the Alaska 4x4 Network, 'akrstabout'.

Call up AT see what they've got. How fucking cold is Fairbanks right now?
