So I'm still learning about photography. I thought I would go downtown and take some shots of Corn Hill in Rochester, NY.

I know I'm putting the home of photography to shame, but you've got to start some where. :wiggle:

Go ahead, and rip it to shreds lol

They're all under exposed and poorly composed. Shooting in manual doesn't make great photos if you don't know how to use it to achieve the style you want. These are literally just point and shoot photos, there was no planning, there was no critical thinking, it was just "that looks like something someone would take a picture of *click".

DSLRs and lenses are just tools, without skill and knowledge to employ them with, you're going to end up with snapshots like these. When you're holding your camera up at something and just pushing the button, it doesn't matter if you're using a Kodak Easyshare or a 1Ds, they're going to look terrible.

Read up on what the settings do first, learn about exposure and how Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO all act like vessels of light when calculating exposure and how they effect depth of field. Read about composition and how to isolate your subject. Learn as much as you can about anything to do with a camera, then when you can look at a photo and understand how it was achieved, go out and reproduce it. Recreating photos is one of the most rewarding and easiest ways to learn about photography.

Thanks. Do you have any recommendation for literature to read? I don't expect my pictures to look very good, but I would like to improve. Just point me in the right direction!

no one knows everything, contrary to what you may hear. a little thing is to try the photo contests, having a goal, and time, is the best way to improve i think.

That's true. Maybe I'll consider submitting photos in the contests. I appreciate the help.

Should I get Digital Photography 1 or 2? I'm making a run to Barnes and Noble in about 20 minutes

Don't get the Kelby book, they're not really what you're looking for IMHO. Understanding Exposure is more conceptual from what I've read.

So there's a festival going on outside of my house tomorrow, and we have street parking. I didn't want to move my car, so I rode my bike (about 5 miles) and I got the Digital Photography book, but I couldn't find Understanding Exposure. Instead, I got Exposure and Lighting. I hope it still helps. I'd consider riding back to return the Digital Photography one, but I'm a 230 lb guy who hasn't ridden a bike in about 4 years. Needless to say, I'm winded and don't feel like it tonight lol Maybe I'll read that one tonight then just return it tomorrow. I'll still be considering any suggestions, though. Let me know!

If you can't find understanding exposure, have the order it for you or get it off amazon or another book site.

once you get the above understood, you'll also need to post process your images as they all are a little gray (DSLR's suffer from this) and can be easily fixed in PP with a simple levels adjustment.

Thanks. I'm thinking what I'll do is read more about exposure, then try to re-create those same images with much better quality to see how they come out. They I'll start to work on better composition
