I started in an amaetur kickball league, I thought I was in good shape but I'm pulling more muscles in kickball then my most extreme lifting sessions. In the first two weeks, I've pulled a groin muscle, my butt, and gotten shin splints LOL. Am I doing something wrong? Someone suggested cleats, not sure what else I can do. Its not taxing in a cardio way at all ;/

kickball league is basically just a reason to drink beer and meet women, each team is required to have a fair amount of women ;)

Uh this would be a definitive NO. Stretch, ice, anti-inflamatories, repeat.

unfortunately, weightlifting does not always equal 'athlete'.

I'd consider weightlifting it's own sport. You lift, you get good at lifting.

You play kickball, you get good at kickball. You play ice hockey... etc...

I seriously doubt your hamstrings and shins are asked to perform in the same manner for kickball and weight lifting. So it's only natural to expect to deal with an adjustment period to get your muscles used to their new expectations...

To clarify, weightlifting=clean & jerk and snatch, weight training= the majority of what people do. Weightlifters are athletes, while people who weight train, well yeah.

yeah, theres a couple different discussions in here. On one hand, theres the discussion of whether or not lifting weights makes you an athlete.

I'm not gonna get into that.

But, on the other hand, there's the discussion about how training for one sport, or weight training in general prepares you for other sports. For example, can lifting physically prepare you for playing kickbal?

    Obviously, the answer is no.

I can say that it doesn't prepare you for ice hockey either.

However, I think it's pretty common knowledge that weight training AND playing your target sport will make you more competitive than just playing your sport...

But i'm sure i'm just regurgitating common knowledge here, so i'll shut up now.

I disagree that it doesn't prepare you for ice hockey. I lift for ice hockey, it helps explosivness but you also need agility exercises as well.

So you're saying that you can do nothing but lift weights, and your first time out your body will be ready?

    Fuck no it won't.

I'm not saying it won't help you be faster and more xplosive, and I clarified that at the end of my last post.

But the OP did nothing but lift, then was confused when he shocked the hell out of his body by changing up the routine and started playing a sport.

Ice hockey puts different amounts of stress on body parts that you don't normally experience in the gym.

So your body will NOT be 100% ready for sport if you attempt to prepare just by lifting.

well if you just lift weights and dont run and stay in shape also then you're gonna suck at sports. just like if you run and play sports only you will suck at lifting weights.
