    When I was last in the game, a Athlon 64 X2 3800+ was a pimp $300 CPU :eek3: . Now there's X2 6000+'s :noes:

Now, I'm gonna build a budget, integrated gfx box and naturally am going the AMD route. What should I get? $110 is about how much leeway I've given myself the way the machine currently looks. So, what to get?

What is the deal with these new X2 BE-2350's? Does super-low wattage = cool and efficient? I would like to have this box use as little energy as possible and be quiet and cool. The last few computers I've had have been either loud, or hot, or both... I want to have a quiet and cool comp! I take it this CPU will be good? But will it be fast enough? When Spore comes out, I will add a decent DX10 card, so I still want some speed!

Now, looks like for that price limit I could get a 65W 4600+. Would this be much faster? How about power consumption/heat wise?

I could get a cheaper 65W 4200+ and put the saved money to other components, like a bigger hard drive or higher end motherboard. How does this compare to the others?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any other tips to keeping this build quiet and cool? I'll be getting this Cooler Master case, which has rave reviews

    you could do that.....

or you could go the smart route and pick up an Intel CPU and Intel mobo and get the better performance and best reliability on the market.

But hey, value, performance, and reliability are overrated anyway... Might as well just get AMD. :mamoru:

why do people sackride that case? I have seen several in person and they are so cheap looking. If you like that style but want something built worth a damn, get the CMStacker.

    it's $34.99 after rebates. :dunno:

But yeah, I also don't understand why people invest thousands of dollars on hardware (cpu, graphics card, etc) and put it in a case like that.

didn't see the price. I guess for the money it's a sturdy case for cheap.... but still that thing is fugly to the max.

AMD's have worked damn fine for me in the past :ugh: You're acting like if I get an AMD I will have tons of very expensive problems and then somehow it will make my teeth fall out and I'll have to get very expensive orthodontal work. :ugh::ugh:

AMD's are not crap at all. Millions of people use AMD and they're just as reliable as Intel, only cheaper.

COST MATTERS. I am on a BUDGET, do you know what that is?

yes I know what a budget is. However AMD is not even close to the reliability of Intel. Check your facts. Save your lunch money. Remove dick from ass.

When I was last in the game, a 3.06GHz P4 with Hyperthreading was a pimp $300 CPU. OT Athlon XP crew, holla!

My P4 just fried after 4years of "hard" service, so I'm looking too. The new AMD energy efficient model look tasty and can be had for short money.

Amd has some good price/performance right now, but only because Intel is kicking their ass.

You might want to consider that Intel has the best foreseeable upgrade path.

The latest revision of Gigabytes DS3 board supports quadcore for $130 shipped.
Then in a week or two when the new pricing structure has settled into place, get yourself a speedy dual core for now, cheap.

And you can upgrade to a badass quad core at a later date for probably just as cheap.

Or if you don't plan on ever doing any overclocking, you could get an Intel mobo for better reliability and just as cheap as the Gigabyte.

Yeah, but the thing is, boards outlast the CPU or software technology. I mean, my Abit and Asus boards for example only cost me $110 & $130. Both are P4 boards....

Well, the CPU just died in one, but the board is still solid (running with a 1.8 right now) and have 4channel RAID on-board,etc,etc... and will last for who knows HOW long?

But no modern CPU will fit into it, soooooo I'm forced into new modern RAM, CPU, MOBO, Video Card (PCI-E) not AGP, new PS, etc...

I still have 386 serverboards that are still running. 286 boards in the scrap pile that if you put power to them, they'll power up!

I've rarely have boards go out... it's usually RAM, CPU's and PS's that fry.. (and HD's.. DUH!)

Yeah, motherboards usually are pretty durable -- at least the ones worth their price tag, anyway.

Well I wasn't just talking about failure rates when I said reliability.

I have an Intel 965 micro atx board that I used to have my E6600 core 2 duo board in. Right now it has an E4400.

Anyway, it has been pure perfection. Not a blip in any way shape or form.

Well when I did my upgrades, I got an Abit AB9 Pro with the 965 chipset.

And the damned audio keeps weirding out on me no matter which sound driver I use. I could troubleshoot it if I had time, but I have too many projects running right now.

But my point is that it never happened with the Intel.

    Almost everything you could imagine.

I'm getting ready to upgrade to a quad core in the next week or so.

That is going to give an upgrade path for my E6600 to go to my son.

I just finished doing some upgrades to my road bike. That got shoved aside by all the other junk I'm always doing.

That's not counting car stuff that's gone on all summer with my kids cars. And house stuff. And...

And now my buddy has talked me into trying Linux.
    God help us all.

AMD is selling their chips at tray price to stay competitive.

Man,... it's like rape and spit.

    AMD: Here's Barcelona!
Intel: Meh, here's our price cuts (rape), and here's Penryn (spit)

Intel is evil I tell ya.

But Can I still make a machine as cool as I could with a 45W/65W AMD machine? The Core Duo I have in my laptop is incredibly hot

I want a cool and quiet computer... generally, low wattage = low heat output = quiet
