Goals: same as many here -- lose fat and gain lean muscle. Most concerned about losing fat (and a bit of weight). I'm 5'5 at 142.

I had been out of consistent lifting/cardio for about 4 months now and want to meet my goals this time around.

Now, I'm back in the game and about one month into my current approach. I'm eating between 1200-1700 calories per day (leaning more towards the 1200 mark). Fat is about 15%, carbs 40-60% and protein 20-40%.

Regarding excercise: I lift 3x per week doing one excercise for each major muscle group each time (back/shoulders/bi's/tris/legs/chest). Between cardio and lifting, I'm burning between 200-400 calories per day. So far, I've lost five pounds.

Does this seem like an OK plan?
If I am eating 1200 per day and burning 400 in exercise, will this have an adverse effect? I've read that the body will go into "starvation mode" and counteract weight loss efforts at below 1k calories. Should I eat more?

Yes, a two year old did my tattoo. I think it looks a bit funny because I was flexing.

Thanks lane. Shouldn't I be going down in weight though :eek3:

And kit ... I don't think I have particulary large abs. If you are referring to the first pic, I'd say it is more of the remnants of a poor diet and too many beers!

Gain about 20-30lbs of lean mass, then worry about dropping the fat.

That is a good observation. I've never had much of a chest ... but I didn't realize that right now it is smaller than ever.

Right now, I really want to get rid of the belly more than anything. I did the lifting heavy 5x per week routine last year and wasn't satisfied with how I looked (granted I only moderately looked after what I ate). Also, I would be medically obese if I gained 20 lbs right now :eek3:

If I am eating 1400 calories per day, but still taking in between 75-125 grams of protein per day, will I be losing muscle?

You don't have any muscle to loose. So no, you'll only loose bone and organs.

Serisously, what is so hard to understand about eat, lift heavy, do that for a year, re-assess your physique and decide what to do from there??? I understand everyone wants to be lean, but looking like a concentration camp victim is not what anyone should strive for.

If that's a belly, I'm Jabba the Fucking Hut. Your abs are clearly visible. What kind of a lifting program are you on? You're allowed to work Abs more than once a week if you want. Hell, do it 3 or 4 for all I care if it makes you feel better.

No. 20 lbs of even somewhat-lean mass would make you look 10 times better.

i think you're dieting way too much and isn't hurting you from getting any substantial gains. eat more and workout harder.
i'm 5'7" and 180 lbs and i'm still trying to bulk a little before i cut.

If it were all so simple this forum wouldn't exist. Not everyone has the same goals. What's more, I did what you suggested for about 4 or 5 months last year (before that I was lifting higher rep, lower weight).

At the across-the-board suggestion, I'll bump my caloric intake up a bit.

I actually haven't been working out my abs at all. I was working out at a community center (it was cheap and a block away) with just free weights, a few machines, and cardio equipment. There wasn't even a place to stretch. I just joined a really nice gym yesterday so I'm pretty amped about being able to vary my workout.

More or less ... here is what I do. All are 10x3. I switch up exercises when I get bored ... Most of the weight I use I can't think of off the top of my head. I don't have a partner right now so I don't push myself too hard with chest.

    Chest
Incline (35 plates on each side)
Butterflies (w/free-weights if machine is being used)
bench (45 plates on each side)

    biceps
    curls (25s)
    preacher curls

    tris
don't know the name of either exercise
One is a reverse curl motion on lat-pulldown type bar
other is with free-weights .. (reverse curl motion again..)

    shoulders
    military press
    shrugs or butterfly

    back
    lat pulldowns
    row machine

    legs
two exercises of whatever I feel like that week

For what exactly? I've not come in here and said anything that was
    A) incorrect or B). stupid. So what's the problem?

I asked a question -- which nobody has been able to answer (although I do appreciate the few kind suggestions).

I appreciate criticism as long as it is constructive. I've come here for any advice people might have. If all you want to do is talk shit, I don't really care -- but atleast learn some grammar first.
