My daughters DS broke a few months ago at the hands of her 3 year old brother. We are going to get her a new DS for Christmas. My daughter and my wife have both commented on going for the DSi instead. We figured the "i" would allow her to play games against friends over a wifi connection in a similar fashion to the way the Wii does online with friend codes and the sort. Now we have learned that the DSi is actually a web browser. And it is a web browser that does not allow for parental controls. I am not as worried about my daughter surfing the wrong places as much as I am about weirdos out on the net. It also does not allow for playing of GBA games.

Are we over reacting to the unrestricted internet?

I don't think there is any specific way for predators to target children browsing the internet on DSi's. :dunno:

Tough call, but the browser looks pretty limited as to what you can do, so I don't see a problem.

Nintendo is usually ridiculously safe when it comes to this kind of thing. I haven't done any research on the DSi specifically, but in general I would say if it's a Nintendo product, you really don't have to worry. They know their target audience is children and they protect their internet accordingly. They probably don't have parental controls because they already exclude anything bad.

dude, i'm a prosecutor, and the majority of my cases involve internet predators.
i lecture about internet safety to kids, and i talk to their parents. the parents i speak to are always like "MY KID IS NEVER GOING ON THE INTERNET." oh yes they are, and if it's on on the DS, it's somewhere else.

this is the wrong way to be. you have to teach your kids how to protect themselves, that there are real threats out there, and the kinds of things people might do to try and "get" them. predator behavior usually involves some kind of conditioning - lying to the child, coaxing them into giving up personal details about their location and living circumstances, and building trust.

assuming your kids know not to talk to strangers in real life, teach them how to be just as careful on the internet. if you're tech savvy enough to be a regular poster on an internet forum, then you're savvy enough to manage your kids' safety.

i have a DSi myself, and as far as i can tell the internet access on it is pretty limited. still, you need to be on top of what they do.

get a DS Lite. longer battery life than the DSi and I believe it has the wifi as well so she can still play with her friends. probably cheaper too.

You might be. Does the DSi support javascript?

That's required for 99% of chats. If it isn't supported, she won't be able to access said chatrooms.

Just keep an eye out on what she's doing. You can most likely check browser history etc, so even every so often you can take a look at what she's been surfing.

thanks everyone. My wife and I monitor her internet activity very closely.

I think the DS Lite would work best for her anyway cause of the battery life and my kid plays mostly God Games, like Harvest Moon, nintendogs, or Animal Crossing. dumb crap like that. I like to mess with her and constantly ask her if she is winning

Just buy her an OT sub to go along with her DSi.

Having just helped a customer with a DSI problem today, it does have parental controls, I know cause everytime I tried to test the web browser it popped up the stupid thing.
