Now I need to figure out something to do while I'm in there. I am shooting for any Mechanical job that would translate over well once I get back into the civilian life.

I'm not joining for a career(at this point we'll see what happens though) so just keep that in mind.

Any advice is welcome. What to look out for when signing up and blah blah.

What kind of mechanical job are you interested in? There are plenty of them out there and it depends on what you like, you could work on gas turbine engines on a destroyer or airframes on a P-3. Surface, subsurface and aviation are all pretty different so think about that before you choose a rate also. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Navy_ratings, it's a good list of current ratings (jobs) you can choose.

How are your grades and ASVAB scores? Are you looking for purely auto type mechanical jobs on the outside or are you looking for something dealing with repairing pumps and valves?

If your scores are good enough you can sign up to be a Nuclear Machinist Mate and that will translate real well to getting a job at a civilian power plant and pretty good money.

Congratulations on joining the world's finest Navy! So you want to do something mechanical than will translate over to the civilian sector when/if you get out. Become an Engineman (EN) and get the Cummins Diesel school after a little while, plus you can also get the 4291 NEC to be an A/C & Refridgeration tech. Another cool thing about the EN rate is you can work on diesels from as small as the ones in a Dodge Ram to the one size of those in locamotives. Become a boat engineer. Get on with ACU-2 out of Little Creek VA and you get to drive those "devil dogs" and their gear up to the beach with an LCU. Want to become a SEAL, being an EN is another in, to include the new Riverine squadrons being stood up or any of the other really cool duties.

Now, I'm not going to shit you, getting qualified and picked up for special assignments requires commitment to not only the Navy, but also yourself.

Being a Nuke has advantages, such as enough credit to pull off a BS degree and mad bonu$e$.

Gas Turbine Mechanic is also a good rating that has skills that translate directly into the civilian comminuty.

I'm a 9588, (Ship's Career Counselor) and I'm also the Command Career Counselor where I am stationed. PM or email me if you want any info.

I think it's over $100K now. E-5 are re-enlisting and buying expensive sports cars. My nuke enlistment bonus was $16K back in '97, but I turned it down when offered another opportunity.

    BTW, noob here: what's QFMFT?

my rate is AS, which is an aviation support equipment technician.

i work on gasoline and diesel engines (two and four stroke), transmissions, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and other aspects of ground support equipment on aircraft carrier's, some types of amphibious ships, and at air squadrons. it's fun as hell, and will definitely help if ever i decide to get out of the navy.
