Ive narrowed it down to the Canon 17-40 f/4L, but am still hesitant if it is worth the extra $200 over the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (and worth the extra f/stop). I figure i'll be taking hte most shots with this lens, so its pretty important. Also, I'm looking at a Linear Polarizer for the Canon, should i just get a UV? I shoot mostly outdoors stuff, a lot of action(mountain bikes), so i'm interested int he polarizer.

you want a circular polariser, not linear. Otherwise it will interfere with your AF.

Either way you will want a UV, it is what should be on your lens when the polariser isnt. Mostly for protection but helps with blue cast in daylight.

When buying a polariser make sure you budget for at least a HOYA HMC or a B+W. You loose quite a bit of light with the cheaper polarisers.

don't buy a uv, the lens is fine without one. its designed to be abused, and you don't need to lose extra light or degredation in quality because of a silly filter.

you do need the circular polarizer though

Be a snob, get the canon, you'll be happy you did if anything ever breaks.

Now im not sure if i want to go wideangle, or go for a tele 70-200 f/4, and stand back from the action?
mostly djs, skate parks, and urban shit in general.

the 17 40 4.0 is a good lens but I'd rather have the Tamron 17 50 2.8 for the extra 1 stop. If you look at the Tamron photos others have taken, you'll be impressed on the image quality from a $400 lens.

Yeah, and i figure with the extra change, i can invest it in a polarizer, a backpack, or a flash...but everyone i hear from says that the 17-40L is amazing.

You probably want the wide first, unless you really think you'll have the extra space more often than not.

remember you can always crop with a wide angle but you can never "go wider" in photoshop.

    i'd reccomend the 17-40L. i have a 70-200 and i really want a wider angle lens.

I want the Canon lenses. But I have the Tamron 17-50 F/2.8 and I'm very happy with it. Tamron also has a 6 year warranty if I'm not mistaken.
