all AB's are strobes, with a modeling light. so it has a bulb for constant light to see what you are doing, and a flash tube to actually light the picture.

AB's are a beginner set of flashes, more than capable for the novice and intermeditae, certainly not something that would be found in a pros studio.

They are easily customizable and easy to understand and get accessories for, and cheep to replace parts with.

AB's are funky simple lights, they also work very well and are quite inexpensive.

What are you going to be shooting? Have you considered speedlites? Although not as powerful, they are much easier to take with you and imo more versatile.

Speedlites just aren't powerful enough. Try to overpower the sun with some speedlites shooting through umbrellas. :greddy:

yes, but if he wants to take photos of his denture collection indoors they would be fine.. thats why I asked.

Also good at the odd party here and there [unless you are cool like pete and lug your ab's to a party for ugly asian people]

So for anything but a large room indoors 2x speedlites would be reasonable. If you never see yourself taking them out to other people's houses / parties / events, then go with the ABs.

On the second read I think that is code for porn.. in which case get good constant lighting so you have an upgrade path to video.

Me neither. Lugging is when you try and drive at an RPM too low for a particular gear. :)

i have 2 ab800s and they work very well..i could probably get away with the 400s too especially if you dont care about shooting at iso200

  21. I never brought all that to any on location shoot if that's what you're trying to say...

  22. i'd definately go 800's, only reason I'd get 400's is for backlighting, even still I think I'm going to get 800's for that too.
