    is it a dell?

if so, check for leaky capacitors on the motherboard.

We've had quite a few issues with some of our dimension models :o

both, it is a dell and it does overheat. replaced the paste, heatsink, fan maybe 6 months ago.

inorite, I'd use ubuntu 100% of the time if it weren't for photoshop/utorrent

Well she's dead, any suggestions for a micro ATX motherboard, 775 with onboard video? AM2 as an alternative.

Sure I'd like to go P35, E6550, 3GB DDR800, etc- but don't have the need. I'm leaning towards a new $80 mobo, $120 CPU, 1-2 GB of ram- and will order today.

    GA-945GCMX-S2 has good reviews.

cost and stability do not always trump familiarity

Well, I know firsthand that the new version of Kubuntu has an easy GUI tool for setting CPU underclocking policy.

$180 shipped for an E2180, Gigabyte G31, 2GB OCZ Gold, and a 20-24 pin adapter @ ClubIT. Should be here Saturday, sweet.

I knew the 945 was older, I considered it because it was local and cheap and decided against it due to it's age as well.

The G31/E2180 that I ordered should be competitive out of the box with what I already had.
