Ok I'm pretty much dead set on an Ak47. Which country makes a good one...other than Russia. How much do they usually run? and what's the deal with the caliper size?

3 main caliber choices are 7.62x39, 5.45 and 5.56. Excluding russian ones, most of the current readily available ones of any decent quality are kits built on US receivers, bulgarian and polish being the better quality parts, yugo and romanian aren't to bad either if built by a reputable dealer. Good imports would be bulgarian, hungarian, chicom. Prices can range from $300 for Romanian WASR in 5.45 to $1300ish for a polytech. Looking at about $500-600 for a nice polish one built up on a USA receiver, $700+ for one on a bulgarian.
5.45 is the cheapest to shoot at the moment, romanians, poles, bulgarians are your main choices for a 5.45 weapon.

Chinese 5.45's don't think any made it here, if they did they will rare and pricey. Alot of 7.62 chicom AK's made it in and a decent ammount of 5.56 ones. I have a Norinco underfolder in 7.62 good rifle. You can find used MAK's for $450ish, underfolders will run you $750+ milled receiver chicoms go for $1000+ Chinese weapons imports are banned now so prices are way above what they use to be.

Chinese guns and ammo have always been pretty good quality, I'd have no hesitation buying most of their small arms. Now if were talking cars or childrens toys thats another story :eek3:

So would $500 to 600 get a decent AK? I don't plan to modify it.

Yeah, for that price range I like the polish ones.

Atlantic has a couple 5.45 polish ones for $600, a few pretty good quality 7.62's for $500+ too

You can get a side folder or under folder for $600, but if you want anything other then a wire side folder your going to be looking at more, soviet style sidefolders cost about $100-150 more, and will be built up from bulgarian kits, SAIGA converts or some custom job someone put a bulgie/soviet stock and trunion on.

Things to be on the look out for if its stamped Century Arms you'll want to be careful they don't always have the best quality, canted sights are common, if its a WASR alot have shoddy workmanship on the magwell area(they were single stack converted to accept regular doublestack ak mags) finish's are always shoddy on them, their yugo's can suffer from problems too. If it says Vulcan, Hesse, or joeken on the reciever run away.
